Kid Nation

I sat with my girls last night and watched the debut of CBS’s highly controversial “Kid Nation.” We usually have church on Wednesday evening however the girls had their school “Open House” which I felt I needed to attend. So, we TiVo’ed “Kid Nation” and watched it when we arrived home.

In case you are not familiar with the show, it is basically a reality show involving 40 kids ages 8-15. No parents, no adults (other than the host and crew who are not visible). These kids were given wagons of supplies and sent off to a “ghost town” in the New Mexico desert for 40 days. A “town council” of four has been assigned to “lead” and award one deserving child a solid gold star worth $20,000 at each town council. Last night’s episode featured the youngest little guy, an 8 yo who was really having a hard time. It made me want to laugh and cry at the same time. You could see him try so hard to be brave, trying not to cry. Then his quivering little voice would squeeze out, “I really want to go home. I think I’m too young for this!” The other kids really tried to encourage him, but at town council he opted to go home. “I just think I’m too young for this,” he squeaked amid pleas for him to stay.

As I thought about this little guy it made me think of King Josiah. Becoming KING at age eight had to be a wild move! I just goes to show the importance of a Godly foundation…
