F O C U S

“It's not what's happening to you now or what has happened in your past that determines who you become. Rather, it's your decisions about what to focus on, what things mean to you, and what you're going to do about them that will determine your ultimate destiny.” (Anthony Robbins)

The Peace of God

It is high time I blog about "my world." I've been hesitant to do so (publicly) because Craig and I have been so intent on hearing God right now. We have had (and still do) our ear to the heart of God and have been moving only when He tells us to. And if you have ever done that you know that this process is often anything but rapid!

When we arrived we began running full force, both feet on the ground, barely got settled and as we were finalizing paperwork for our facility.... God spoke a resounding, "WAIT!" So, we did. We have learned the hard way that when God says WAIT... God means WAIT! There is no deep rooted Greek preface.. He means WAIT! SO we did, and we have been praying, fasting, praying, and fasting, listening, listening and seeking His direction.

Craig shared with me that he is learning not to allow his passion to override his peace... or I should say, HIS peace. That is an incredible lesson, one we have failed in the past. However, as we have used that attitude to fuel our prayer life and mission... we have found ourselves in the lap of the Father. And from here, things look so different! Even His words have taken on new life.

This has been a LONG month, almost two, but it HAS been a month of peace in Christ. Craig and I have neither one experienced anxiety or felt pressure to "make something happen" where at one time we would have. We so want to walk out our destiny and purpose in Him... HIS way, because it IS the best way... not the only way... but THE BEST WAY.

I say not the "only way" because there are times we take the LONG way and waste a lot of time, blood, sweat and tears running around in circles until we finally "get it..." and obey Him.

As we gear up for what God is setting us up to do in this region, please be in prayer with us as we tune in and hear the voice of God... moving when and as He speaks...

What If It All Goes Right?

I am a huge Nashville Star fan. I believe it has much more integrity than American Idol and the talent is off the charts. This year I was rooting big time for Melissa Lawson, wife, mother of five boys, and not the "pin up" model that some of the talent searches seem to seek. But boy did she have potential and a serious gift! After week 1 it was shocking to see her in the bottom 2. What was wrong with America??? However, she popped right back up and kept pushing back. And it paid off, she won.

Her first single is a song that I heard her sing at the finale, but it wasn't until this week that I really studied the lyrics... and they, settled something in my spirit... I know, some of you are probably thinking... "really, God spoke to you through Melissa Lawson's new single???" I guess the answer to that is not so much that He "spoke" to me through the song but rather He used the song to confirm what He had already been speaking to me.

I had talked to a lot of people, emailed a few and what I REALLY wanted was someone to say, "Here is what you should do..." and then I get the blueprint and follow it... but what I got was a lot of "What do YOU feel Tara? What is God saying to YOU????" Ugh... I heard what He was saying but it was scaring me to death! A million thoughts ran through my head! "What if we're wrong?" "God, what if this, and what if that???" "What if it doesn't work... again!?" And then, after sitting back, praying and dumping all of that in God's lap... Melissa Lawson's video came on... here is the video... I believe it may speak to others as well...

What If It All Goes Right

What if that road that you're taking's a dead end
What if love leaves you all jaded and broken
What if that limb breaks you're climbing out on
Yeah, what if it all goes wrong

But, what if it all goes right
What if it all works out
What if the stars line up
And good luck rains down
What if you chase your dreams
And it changes your whole life
Yeah, what if it all goes right

What if that road is a beautiful slow drive
What if that love ends up lasting a life time
What if that limb holds you, oak tree strong
What if this time nothing goes wrong

What if it all goes right
What if it all works out
What if the stars line up
And good luck rains down
What if you chase your dreams
And it changes your whole life
Yeah, what if it all goes right

What if you climb to the mountain top
And touch the sky
Grab a cloud as it passes by
You might fall you might fall
But then again you might fly

What if it all goes right
What if it all works out
What if the stars line up
And good luck rains down
What if you chase your dreams
And it changes your whole life
Yeah, what if it all goes right

The Truth About PRIDE

I get Perry Noble’s blogposts daily in my email. They are always great nuggets of wisdom. However, every once in a while, one of them will really hit home. Today’s post was one of those! I’m gonna to post it here, but I am also going to punch in a thought here and there about my own journey and struggles with PRIDE… (my thoughts will be tagged…)

PRIDE
(Perry Noble)

Scripture is so clear–God hates pride! In fact, I read a couple of times this past week where He actually opposes the proud!!! (James 4:6, I Peter 5:5)

Yet EVERY leader I know wrestle with pride! It’s tempting…it’s intoxicating…and it’s sinful. What is P-R-I-D-E?

P = Personalized

When a leader runs every decision through the grid of, “How will this impact me,” rather than, “how will this impact the Kingdom”–pride is often rearing its ugly head.
Pride always whispers to the leader, “It’s all about you…and if this doesn’t suit your personal preferences OR isn’t really convenient for you…then don’t!”

Tara: One thing many leaders struggle with or will struggle with at some time is the battle between thinking about “my” church, “my” congregation, “my” ministry, etc. instead of “Kingdom” thinking and living. Kingdom is whole, collective, and sacrificing for the great commission, Prideful (stinkin’ thinkin’) is selfish and contemplates how everything will “make me look.” I’ve been there, and it’s ugly. Renewing our minds to think as Christ does… Kingdom… will revolutionize everything we ever thought ministry or leadership was!

R = Reconsideration

Pride will NOT allow us to reconsider a previous bad decision because we fear losing face with the people we lead…not understanding that following through on that bad decision will damage our leadership integrity WAY more than admitting a mistake.

IN FACT, admitting a mistake actually gives us credibility as a leader…more often than not! If there is a bad decision…and you know it–change it…everyone will be thankful!

Tara: WHO likes to admit they were wrong? NOBODY! However, I found that nothing shuts someone hellbent on tearing you up over mistake than a decision to take the high road, humble yourself and say, “ I messed up, I apologize, what can I do to make it up?” At that point, as Perry said, willingness to do just that does make you look bad, it gives you credibility!

I believe being transparent does the same thing. Forget the sugarcoating and chasers, be honest, shed the pride and make a change.

I = Individual

Pride tells the leader, “YOU make the call…and if no one around you agrees with you…screw them and their ideas!”

I believe in point leadership. I believe that God has called the pastor to lead…to be the decision maker. However…in my opinion, that ONLY works if he is mutually submissive to the people he leads with.

For example…if I had something I thought needed to be done…and I honestly thought it was from God–and so I took it to our senior management team and shared it with them…and all of them pushed back…I would not say, “Forget you guys…I’m the leader!!!”

I would listen…take notes…absorb every word they say…and then prayerfully reconsider. Doing this has allowed me to escape MANY mistakes! The best leadership resource many of us have are the people around us!!!

Tara: I am an idea person, I like to strategize and find our what worked for others. Re-inventing the wheel is something that does not appeal to me. Has it been done? Did it work? Why or why not? The Bible tells us, “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” Seeking a multitude of counsel is the basis of Brainstorming – exploiting the simple fact that other people can offer experience, information and novel insights into a situation that we simply do not possess ourselves.

I have always made it a point to always submit myself to people who will challenge my thoughts and ideas, shift the paradigm a little to ask, “What if…” I have FAR from perfected this approach, but I make HUGE strives whenever the opportunity presents itself!

D = Deceptive

Pride is SO easy to see in others…and almost impossible to see in ourselves!
There is a fine line between being prideful and being confident. Some people are confident and are mistaken as prideful…and others are prideful and mistaken as confident. The only people that truly know are the leader and Jesus!!!

We can be confident leaders without being prideful…we KNOW pride is leaking in when we begin to think, “I don’t need these people…I can run this show…if something is going to be done right around here then I am going to have to do it!”

Tara: Having been on both sides of this coin I feel that I can give an honest and educated opinion on this. I am a fairly confident woman with big ideas, thoughts, and, *sigh* I can be loud about it at times (nice way of saying I have a big mouth at times!)! Depending on my motivation, I can be considered either confident and passionate or cocky and prideful.

So, I have put into play a little “prayer” in my life… I simply ask God to remind me daily that I am NOT Teflon (if I mess up- it WILL stick to me- I do not want to be a finger pointer...) and I am not the Messiah.. even on my best day, I am a mere servant at my core. I rely on god every waking moment of my day! I need Him to put the right people, who have the right skills, who know or have known key people, and are in the right places... around me, beside, and over me so I can fulfill the task at hand in a way that brings honor and glory to HIS agenda! I also pray daily that the Holy Spirit will wear me as a coat… and He will definitely help keep me in line! LOL!

E = Everything

Pride IMPACTS everything! When a leader will not confess and repent of pride…every single area of the church (or the area he leads) will be tainted! We can’t maintain a posture of pride and receive the blessings and favor of God at the same time.
One of the most dangerous things God can bless a church or leader with is success! When great things happen we need to simply…

  • Remember where He found us!
  • Thank Him for His faithfulness
  • Understand He doesn’t need us…but because of HIS mercy He uses us anyway!

Tara: Wow, ain’t that the truth! We can’t run from it, if pride is a factor in our lives, sooner or later it will catch up to us. I have been told often that the best way to cast off pride is to refrain from being defensive. And ooo, that IS a hard one! Our human nature wants to attack and prove our innocence. However, when we simply select humility as our “weapon” of choice and we swallow the urge to get on the horn and lay out our evidence then we are killing our flesh, killing our pride. Truth will speak for itself when necessary, but a proud spirit will lash out defensively. Again… learned this the hard way! And some days, I am re-taking that test.

Realizing that pride does in fact impact EVERYTHING will force us as leaders to examine ourselves more thoroughly. As we daily empty our cup before the Lord, He will point out any area that pride may be affecting or creeping up in. Though it can be a painful process, I do love when he does it because it is only a constant reminder of how far I’ve come and where I am going to next!

Perhaps the Lord....

Mark Batterson's blog post today.. wow.. this is SUCH a word in DUE SEASON for us... had to post it here... check out more of Mark's wisdom here

Perhaps

Here's one of my favorite phrases in Scripture. I Samuel 14:6 says, "Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf." I love that modus operandi. But I honestly think many if not most Christians take the opposite approach. Perhaps the Lord WON'T act in our behalf. We let fear dictate our decisions. We have a better-safe-than-sorry mentality. We live as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death.

Maybe it's time for a paradigm shift. When did we start believing that God wants to take us to safe places to do easy things? Here's a thought: the will of God is not an insurance plan. It's a daring plan.

I think we've made a false assumption that the will of God gets easier as we grow spiritually. Some dimensions do get easier with the consistent practice of spiritual disciplines. But I also think God will give us more difficult, dangerous, and daring things to do!

I love this phrase. It's so hopeful. It's so optimistic. And it's the key to living with holy anticipation. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. May God give us the spirit of Jonathan!

He Knows My Heart...

This 'season' we are in is proving to be unpredictable at times. It seems that just when I begin to get my "bearings" and feel some momentum beginning, BAM... something tries to stop it. Today it came in the form of an email which stated someone's opinions and obvious lack of understanding regarding me personally.

My initial reaction was to get upset, the things said were hurtful, accusing and coming from a completely one sided individual who really didn't have all the facts. However, one word from God set me straight. He whispered in my ear, "It's okay Tara, they just don't know your heart. BUT I DO!"

And as my tears dried, and as I sat in my Daddy God's lap, an old song began to roll over in my spirit... "He knows my heart, He knows the way I feel, Whether I'm right, Whether I'm wrong, I'll have HIM here when others are gone. You see the outside part, but HE knows my heart..."

I know this won't be the last time I am misjudged or misunderstood, however, as long as God knows my heart, and I act on that... everything will work out for my good! He has my heart right in the palm of His hand and let me tell you, it's a daily work in progress to keep it pure before Him! But still, even when the dust, debris and garbage others, well meaning or not, try to heap onto the "constant work in progress" of my heart... He simply knocks it away because HE knows my heart better than anyone else...

I was able to find "He Knows My Heart" online in both lyric and digitally...

He Knows My Heart - Vicki Yohe

He Knows My Heart (Vicki Yohe)

God knows I try with all of my heart
I know I have made my mistakes
And in my life I've been misunderstood
Friends have turned
And just walked away
I don't need their approval
But I wish they could see
What our God placed inside of me
All that I am the good and the bad
It's my Father who justifies me

He knows my heart
He knows the way I feel
Whether I'm right
Or whether I'm wrong
I'll have him here
When others are gone
You see the outward part
But he knows my heart

There have been times alone in the night
My own heart condemns me
To the grave
But God in his grace
Shared his embrace
His love is bigger than me anyway
I can't explain this feeling
Here in my soul
Words along are never enough
To try to describe this feeling inside
The world has never known
His kind of love

I know that time has a season
When all things are revealed
He knows what's deep down inside me
And I'll be faithful yes faithful

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Matthew 5:8

My "Sacred Romance"

Psalm 63 was the theme chapter from my first distance learning lesson... Beth Moore taught about the "sacred romance" between a woman and her God. I was reading Psalm 63 today in The Message translation... it is awesome.... and it is speaking volumes to me. I'll be sharing more later but I wanted to share it here...

Psalm 63
A David Psalm, When He Was out in the Judean Wilderness

1 God—you're my God! I can't get enough of you!
I've worked up such hunger and thirst for God,
traveling across dry and weary deserts.

2-4 So here I am in the place of worship, eyes open,
drinking in your strength and glory.
In your generous love I am really living at last!
My lips brim praises like fountains.
I bless you every time I take a breath;
My arms wave like banners of praise to you.

5-8 I eat my fill of prime rib and gravy;
I smack my lips. It's time to shout praises!
If I'm sleepless at midnight,
I spend the hours in grateful reflection.
Because you've always stood up for me,
I'm free to run and play.
I hold on to you for dear life,
and you hold me steady as a post.

9-11 Those who are out to get me are marked for doom,
marked for death, bound for hell.
They'll die violent deaths;
jackals will tear them limb from limb.
But the king is glad in God;
his true friends spread the joy,
While small-minded gossips
are gagged for good.

Handling Transition Without Losing Your Mind!

Well my friends... I have been asked to post my "notes" from my message on transition that I did at Unstoppable. So, tonight... I am posting a partial transcript from that message!

I pray it ministers to you....

How to Handle Transition Without Losing Your Mind

The word “transition” is defined as “passage: the act of passing from one state or place to the next.” That definition sounds so, harmless! However, any of us who are going through a time of transition know that it can make or break you if it is not handled correctly.

Transition is one of those “events” that can affect us in several different ways… physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually.

In the last year, how many of you have faced:

· A geographical move?

· A change in ministry?

· A birth?

· Significant loss

· Substantial Financial hardship or decision?

· Rejection?

· Illness or physical challenges?

· Emotional stress or trauma?

Life is a process of beginnings and endings. In both life and nature, there are times when things move slowly and don’t seem to change very much. Then, suddenly, things change quickly. Moving from August to September, the weather changes gradually at first, and then it seems that suddenly summer is over. It is the same in our lives; transitions are as natural as the changing seasons.

Key point: Transition in life is challenging because we are forced to let go of the familiar and face the future with a feeling of vulnerability.

And to make a difficult situation worse, most life transitions begin with a string of losses, some of which we mentioned a few moments ago.

Key point: Any significant loss makes most people feel fearful and anxious.

We live in a culture that has taught us to be very uncomfortable with uncertainty, so we are anxious when our lives are disrupted.

On the positive side, these transitions give us a chance to learn about our strengths and to explore what we really want out of life. This time of reflection can result in a sense of renewal, stability, and a new equilibrium.

A life transition can be positive or negative, planned or unexpected. Some transitions happen without warning, and they may be quite dramatic. Other life transitions come from positive experiences.

Key point: Even though events like these are usually planned and anticipated, they can be just as life-altering as the unexpected events.

Whether positive or negative, life transitions cause us to leave behind the familiar and force us to adjust to new ways of living, at least temporarily. They can leave us feeling completely unprepared and we may be thrown into a personal crisis, feeling shocked, angry, sad, and withdrawn.

Transition is when your potential (your future locked up in the present) is trying to break out! While you are in “labor” trying to birth your destiny, there will always be a “transition” phase!

How many of you ladies were able to “skip” the transition phase of natural childbirth? None of us! Without going through transition you’ll never deliver that baby. Even for those who had had a C-section, your transition is not the same but you do have one although it comes after the birth!

Getting up after having the surgery and making that first walk to the bathroom is painful, and no matter how long you may put it off it you will still have to go through it.

Transition in childbirth is tough! As the body adjusts to accommodate the last few centimeters of dilation, just before you begin pushing, the hormone levels are so high that you will see undeniable physical signs.

What is amazing though is transition is generally the shortest part of labor, lasting 15 minutes to half an hour on average. However, this is also the most intense part of labor for many women! The major emotional marker for this stage is giving up.

The "giving up" or feeling out of control may be recognized by comments the mother makes. It is not uncommon for a mother to say, "I can't do this," or "I need something." This is not necessarily the mother asking for medication (although she may be begging for that epidural!), but for help. She can no longer handle the labor the way she has been, and she needs to do something different.

Ladies, when we are forging our way through the difficulty of transition in our lives, the worst thing we can do is fight it. The same goes for the woman giving birth to a child. Tools and exercises have been developed to “coach” women in childbirth through transition. Well, today, I’m going to be your Lamaze coach “so to speak!” I am going to share three principles for handling transition in life as a women in ministry without losing your mind! These principles have brought me through days when all I wanted to do was literally curl up and die.

It would have been so easy to give up, to throw in the towel, to go to bed and stay there indefinitely, BUT God through the Holy Spirit got me through… here is the first principle...

1.) Rely on the Lord

Your attitude will affect your outcome. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You, leans on You, and hopes confidently in You.”

Transition is not an indication that you have failed. It is the indicator that something new is about to manifest in your life. You may not know exactly what it is., but something is on the threshold!

It was surprising to me to find that even highly successful people are plagued with the transition phase in their lives. The first American woman to win 3 gold medals at a single Olympics was quoted as saying, “When I was going through my transition of being famous, I tried to ask God why was I here? What was my purpose? Surely, it wasn't just to win three gold medals. There has to be more to this life than that.”

Transition is a “Trojan Horse”… you cannot tell what is on the inside by looking on the outside! What is inside will either help you or prepare you for battle, either way when we commit ourselves to the Lord, lean on Him and hope confidently in Him, we will prevail. We win!

One way that aids us in learning to rely on the Lord is through meditating on the Him; make sure you get one on one time with Him. I have always found that times in the night can be especially calming for me during times of transition. When everyone was in bed, I would get up, turn on worship music and bask in the Lord. Sometimes I would just cry, other times I would dance and worship, and there have been many times I just sat and listened. And writing, oh yes, it is a form of “spiritual therapy” for me! But in all of these things, I gained peace of mind because I relied on Him. I have learned through the most painful times of transition, the loneliest days of my life, to lay back in His arms and trust that Daddy God was in control!

2.) Watch Your Words

I don’t know about you, but I can pick up on a “Negative Nelly” a mile away! To be honest, negative people drive me crazy! I’ve always been a “glass is half full” kind of girl! In times of transition, it is so easy to begin whining and complaining. Ecclesiastes 10:12-13 tells us, “The words of a wise person are gracious. The talk of a fool self-destructs— He starts out talking nonsense And ends up spouting insanity and evil.” Our failure to “speak life” could turn our temporary circumstance into something that could thwart our destiny! Your life will follow your words. However, when we choose to say what God says we get the opposite result. “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21. Let’s do a double take on this scripture for a moment… when we continually dwell on a negative situation by talking about it, complaining… we are speaking “life” to a negative situation! Our words can prolong, empower and solidify the circumstances in our lives. So, instead of speaking “life” to our difficult times, we should speak death to them by cancelling them out with the Word of God!

I know this is especially difficult at times. I mean reality is reality! And if we are all honest, there are times when we have prayed every prayer, quoted every promise and declared everything there is to declare and STILL, we are ready to lose it! It is at those times when we just don’t know hat else to do.

How many of you ever took a Lamaze class when you were expecting? Do you remember the session on breathing? Lamaze teachers use breathing techniques to help manage the pain a labor and delivery. These patterned breaths help force oxygen into the blood, but should not be confused with rapid breathing or hyperventilation. Hyperventilation causes dizziness and other problems that only increase anxiety. While using Lamaze breathing can help you to manage your pain, it will not eliminate your pain, it helps you through it.

Okay, now for the spiritual application. Someone taught me about ten years ago exactly what I need to do when I have NO IDEA what to do, when the pain of transition and circumstance has you close to the point of losing your very mind… PRAY IN THE HOLY GHOST!!! That, my friends, is the equivalent to Lamaze breathing! When you begin to stir up the Spirit of God that is within you by the power of your prayer language, you will pull down heaven, crash the gates of hell and God will give you the strength to get you through! You may have NO idea what to say or how to begin, or when all you want to do is complain, allow the Holy Spirit to pray through you! You will find yourself encouraged and refreshed in the midst of your transition and any adversity it brings!

3.) Don’t Stop!

During transition in childbirth, you’ll often hear a woman say, “I don’t want to do this anymore! I want to quit!” Generally, at that moment, a coach, a helper can be heard saying, “No, you can’t stop now! You’re doing great! I know you’re tired, I know you are in pain, but you are so close! Don’t stop, it’s almost over!”

Our good friend the Apostle Paul provides us with some timely advice when we get to this point in Philippians 3:12-14 “I'm not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don't get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I've got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I'm off and running and I'm not turning back.”

At this very moment, your coach, your helper, the Holy Spirit is whispering in your ear, “Don’t stop! Keep your eyes on the prize! I know this isn’t what you thought it would be. I know that you are in pain, you’ve been hurt. I know you’ve lost hope, I know you need a miracle yesterday, and I know that you are afraid… but you can’t stop. You’re almost there! You can do it! You can make it! And through it all, girl, you are looking good!”

One of the most powerful truths about transition is that although it is difficult and painful, it is also a stepping stone to the next level in your life, your ministry, your marriage, your healing, and your miracle!

I know how difficult it is. I know that sometimes it might seem easier to quit, but DON’T! Whenever you feel like stopping, get around people who will speak to what is in you when you can’t. Find other women who know the importance of a life giving atmosphere who will partner with you in removing negative influences and will set the atmosphere in worship! Find yourself a Mary… like Elizabeth did, a person who will make your baby jump during the most difficult time of the process.

But whatever you do, DON’T STOP! Don’t abort what God has placed inside of you because of transition, don’t allow people who have their own agendas to get in the way and cause you to miscarry either.

You are on assignment, you have a purpose, a destiny, and your labor is not in vain. God has prepared you for such a time as this… DON’T STOP!

What a Week!

This has been an interesting week. With that said, I would also like to say that Craig and I and our girls are going to be just fine. Thank you for your calls, emails and concern. One thing is certain, I have the most incredible sistas and friends! My email inbox has been overflowing with encouragement and scripture. THANK YOU! And Deanna has offered herself night and day. THAT has been such a nice reprieve, the fact that I can call her up and complain, cry, scream or ask for advice. Folks, this will be another post very soon... but Unstoppable was a complete and utter set up for everything I am facing right now. I was prepared and now I am overcoming! Praise God!
For those of you I haven't spoken to or emailed, Craig and I got quite a shock this past Wednesday. Upon his homecoming from a series of powerful meetings in Lake City, FL, he was met with the unfortunate news that due to economic and financial hardship, four position were being eliminated from the church where Craig served as Connections and Outreach Pastor. The church made other percentage cuts as well. Let's face it, our economy has not made it easy for anyone these days. However, we still serve a BIG God!

To be honest it has been a very difficult few days. This action has placed a tremendous hardship on us, as it would anyone. Financially, and it has also displaced us. Kaitlyn is quite upset because she was extremely involved in youth and headed the youth dance team. But again, we trust in a BIG God!

Right now Craig and I are being forced to consider things we never considered prior to this happening. Unemployment benefits are totally foreign to me. BUT I do know that God knew all of this was going to occur before it ever did, SO my trust is in him!

In the natural, we do wish it had been handled differently, I mean what pastor wants to have to make such cuts?? My heart goes out to all of the people there. They are calling us and asking lots of questions. Some we can answer, some we choose not to, basically because we just don't have the answers right now. We are waiting on God!

It is getting late and I am literally falling asleep as I type this. I'll post Part 2 tomorrow.

We appreciate all of your prayers!

Shattering the Glass Ceiling

Yes, I've been away from my blogdom for a little while. I've been prepping nonstop for Unstoppable and squeezing in moments to finish getting the girls ready for school to start on Tuesday. They still have one more day of summer fun to indulge in!

In the meantime, I have been GIDDY with excitement over McCain's choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for his VP running mate! So, I have been itching to post about it! I have also been hankering to post about another woman... Hilary Clinton and her speech at the DNC. In true Destiny Driven style, I am going to tie these events to something near and dear to my hear t (without disclosing who I may or may not vote for!)... the shattering of the glass ceiling in both the secular and church arenas.

Let's start with Hilary Clinton. Wow, what a woman! She certainly took the Democratic Party on a wild ride! Alas, the world was not quite ready for a woman in the Commander in Chief's chair, close but no Presidential Seal. All in all, when it came down to it, I believe she portrayed the picture of "grace under pressure" when she gave a charismatic, passionate speech at the DNC last week. In my own opinion, I do not believe a man could have or ever has brought it like she did.

As she forged ahead, the question on everyone's mind... "Can she pull this speech off without sounding bitter???"... was answered within seconds of beginning....

"And whether you voted for me, or voted for Barack, the time is now to unite as a single party with a single purpose. We are on the same team, and none of us can afford to sit on the sidelines. This is a fight for the future. And it’s a fight we must win together." (Hilary Clinton DNC speech)

And whether we like it or not, she made a HUGE crack in the glass ceiling not only for all of us as women, but definitely for our daughters....

"And after so many decades — 88 years ago on this very day — the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote became enshrined in our Constitution. My mother was born before women could vote. My daughter got to vote for her mother for president."

I have to say that I never considered what that must have felt like to Hilary and Chelsea. Like her or not, THAT had to be an amazing moment for grandmother, mother and daughter. And, come on, who didn't love her little shout out to her "sista' girls" with the quote...

"To my supporters, to my champions — to my sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits — from the bottom of my heart: Thank you. Thank you because you never gave in. You never gave up. And together we made history."

Can I say I felt empowered by her speech?... minus the knocks against McCain... I hate that, but both parties do it... part of the political game I guess! Still, when Hilary quoted Harriet Tubman... I felt the Holy Ghost! Am I being a bit facetious? Um, yeah... but at the same time, I am being totally honest...

"By following the example of a brave New Yorker , a woman who risked her life to bring slaves along the Underground Railroad. On that path to freedom, Harriet Tubman had one piece of advice. If you hear the dogs, keep going. If you see the torches in the woods, keep going. If they’re shouting after you, keep going. Don’t ever stop. Keep going. If you want a taste of freedom, keep going."

Wow! If I were Barak Obama, I'd be seriously kicking myself! Why in the world did he NOT choose Hilary Rodham Clinton as his VP running mate? I don't know the answer to that, and as my husband pointed out, perhaps he actually did and she turned him down. Is Biden a better partner? Maybe, I don't know, but I do know that John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin caused every jaw in America to do one of two things... if your jaw is of the male persuasion, it DROPPED... female persuasion... it POPPED up into a beaming smile!

Governor Sarah Palin, the spokes model for 71% of women in the nation. That 71% of woman have children (60% have children UNDER 3) AND careers! Sarah Palin could not have come at a better time for a woman like me.

Sarah Palin is a born again Christian who believes in the power of the Holy Spirit! At the opening night banquet of the 2008 Alaska AG District Council, Governor Sarah Palin addressed the delegates and guests. Governor Palin spoke of her appreciation for the Assemblies of God and requested that the Council pray for both her and the State of Alaska. Superintendent Ted Boatsman, who was Palin's junior high pastor at Wasilla Assembly of God, along with Pastor Mike Rose of Juneau Christian Center, where Palin presently attends church when in Juneau, laid hands on the Governor and led the Council in prayer.

She is also mother of a large family and lives partnership in marriage with her husband, Todd. As a matter of fact, this supermom/governor/VP candidate Palin gave birth to her youngest child, Trig, in April 2008 while in office as governor. Though she announced that she was pregnant only during the start of her third trimester and one month before Trig was born, her pregnancy is reported to have surprised Alaskans, including her staff. After her water broke, on the day of Trig's delivery, Palin delivered a keynote address in Texas and then flew 8 hours to Alaska. Palin returned to office quickly, just three days after delivering Trig. The baby has Down syndrome; Palin's decision to have the baby was applauded by the pro-life community. (Information quoted from Wiki-pedia)

Her husband is no stranger to being a partner in parenting either! Like his wife, he is able to swap the traditional roles. “My husband loves being a dad as much as I love being a mom,” Palin said. “I’ve got great help there.” (quoted from Timesonline)

And, she is an obvious believer in co-pastoring as well because when in the capital she attends Juneau Christian Center where the church staff is made up of four co-pastoring couples! (Check it out here... )

She was a “hockey mom” who cut her teeth at the parent-teacher association before becoming mayor of Wasilla, a suburb of Anchorage with a population under 7,000. In 2006 she beat the corrupt male establishment in Alaska to win the governorship. (quoted from Timesonline)

She hunts, ice-fishes and is a crack shot who knows how to fire an M16 rifle. “I was raised in a family where gender was not going to be an issue,” she said. “The girls did what the boys did. Apparently in Alaska that’s quite commonplace.” (quoted from Timesonline)

Sarah Palin is sharp, she is determined and I believe she brings balance to the Republican ticket! If people are concerned that John McCain has no heart and does not want to bring our troops home, he wouldn't be able to ignore the voices of every mother who has a son or daughter in Iraq- even if he wanted to, because his partner will be there to remind him! That's right in addition to everything else, Sarah Palin's 18 year old son is headed to Iraq in September.

I listened to Sarah Palin's acceptance speech and I read the transcript over and over. I believe that Sarah can be closely compared to a modern day Esther. But THAT is another post!

Her quote... "It was rightly noted in Denver this week that Hillary left 18 million cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceiling in America but it turns out the women of America aren’t finished yet and we can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all." rang out for every woman in the world.

I am truly a fan of both Sarah Palin and Hilary Clinton. I may not be in full agreement with either of them on every issue, but one thing I am for is the equal opportunity for every person, regardless of their gender to fulfill every bit of God given potential and destiny within them! On that issue, we are ALL on the same page!

Now, where does the church fit in with all this? Some of the church, they are right with me... others, not so much.

When will the glass ceiling of the church be hammered with 18 million cracks? I'll leave you with a couple nails that need to be hit so it can be....

1.) When the church stops misinterpreting the scriptures. One scripture I am referring to is about women being the "weaker vessel." Paul uses the "vessel" metaphor when he exhorts every Christians to be "a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work"

(2Tm 2:19-21). This is true for anyone, male or female, who "names the name of the Lord". This does not tell us what Peter means by calling a woman "the weaker vessel", but it certainly shows us something he does not mean. A woman who belongs to God and names his name is no less honored, no less sanctified, and no less useful to the Master than a man who belongs to God and names his name.

(Acts 9:15). There have been times when God has intervened in the life of some person and selected that person for a special purpose. Paul was one, Mary was another. She was the chosen vessel whereby "God sent forth his Son born of a woman" (Gal 4:4). We would be hard pressed to think of any person in history more wonderfully chosen than Mary, chosen to be the mother of the Lord (Lke 1:26-56). This does not tell us what Peter means by calling a woman "the weaker vessel", but it certainly shows us something he does not mean. Among God's chosen vessels a woman was bestowed and blessed with no less greatness than a man.

A different metaphor, that of a soldier, is used by Paul when he exhorts, "Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the full armor of God that you may be able to stand firm..."

(Eph 6:10-13). Whom is Paul addressing? Whom is he calling to battle? Who is to gird their loins with truth and plate their breasts with righteousness? Whose feet are to be shod with the gospel of peace, and who is to grasp the shield of faith? Who is to don the helmet of salvation and to bravely wield the sword of the Spirit? Who is to march into battle against the powers of darkness, the terrible spiritual forces of wickedness? It is no battle for a weakling. Who shall be a soldier for Christ? The answer does not tell us what Peter means by calling a woman "the weaker vessel", but it certainly shows us something he does not mean. In the Lord's army women and men fight shoulder to shoulder and one is as "strong in the Lord" as the other.

Yet another metaphor, that of an athlete running the marathon, is used by the Hebrew writer when urging us to "run with endurance the race that is set before us"

(Heb 12:1-2). Who is to run this race of endurance? Whose legs are to be strong, and whose feet swift? Whose will is to get them through the pain barrier, and discipline them to make the distance? The answer does not tell us what Peter means by calling a woman "the weaker vessel", but it certainly shows us something he does not mean. In the Christian race, women and men run together without handicap. Women and men start and finish at the same lines. Women "run with endurance" the same race as men.

Some people read Peter's statement that a woman is "the weaker vessel" and say, "There you are, you see, God says that woman is the weaker vessel. That is God's law and purpose for woman. God created her to be the weaker sex." However that is a fancy. Peter is not saying any such thing, for if he were he would contradict the Genesis account...

"God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them". The first two humans were different, but neither was superior or inferior to the other (Gen 1:27). Adam could not find a wife among all the creatures of flesh and blood. So God took a part of Adam himself, one of his ribs in fact, and from it created a woman who corresponded to Adam. She alone among all flesh was his equal. Otherwise she would have been unsuitable like the other creatures (Gen 2:18-23). This does not tell us what Peter means by calling a woman "the weaker vessel", but it certainly shows us something he does not mean. Woman is not a lesser being than man, for she came out of man and like him was created in the image of God. Peter himself said that woman and man are "heirs together of the grace of life" (1Pe 3:7).

Many ministers will custom build their own understanding of scripture without really studying the Word. For instance, many are quick to point out scriptures classifying women as less than, however, the Word says that God is no respecter of persons! Furthermore, at certain times in history, this same ignorance rallied people to justify slavery as well!

2.) Give both men AND women equal opportunity for fulfillment of destiny and call. The day of the "good ol' boys' club" is OVER! Although there is still a remnant of men who are not up to snuff in the corporate world, the church is shamefully behind in this arena! A dear friend of mine was once told that, "women in ministry is kind of like whipped cream. A little is real good, but a whole bowlful will make you sick!" Men who make and believe comments like that make me sick!

Pastors, if we are living in a time when a young woman can vote for her mother for President of the USA, it is high time the church recognizes that there are women in ministry ready to take on similar roles in the church and in denominational offices all over the USA.

This post could go on forever, that I am certain of! However, as a woman who wears the hats of believer, wife, mother, minister, project manager, daughter, sister, friend, and citizen... I have a list as long as this post that I must get to!

In closing, to all of the Palin haters... (and I need to stop getting riled by them...) just hush your mouths... Esther was an orphan, unqualified, unpolished, BUT... obedient... and look at what God did through her!

And to Governor/VP Candidate Palin.... heed the words spoken by another woman we both respect....

"On that path to freedom, Harriet Tubman had one piece of advice. If you hear the dogs, keep going. If you see the torches in the woods, keep going. If they’re shouting after you, keep going. Don’t ever stop. Keep going. If you want a taste of freedom, keep going. And even in the darkest of moments, that is what Americans have done. We have found the faith to keep going." (Hilary Rodham Clinton)

Your Father Loves You

Good Morning American did a feature on the Steven Curtis Chapman family, a follow up after the tragic loss of their daughter Maria a few months ago. It was a great piece showing an intact family coming together and relying on their hope and faith in God to get them through their loss.
My heart went out to Steven’s wife; Mary Beth is her name I think. She made the “real” statement that at this point she didn’t really care who else was touched by Maria’s death, she was not concerned whether or not the lives of others were changed. Her mother’s heart just wants Maria back. Now, I am sure she does “care” for others but seriously, what mother would not feel the same way? She loved that little girl with her entire being. She feels as if a part of her is missing.

Steven spoke about the day of the tragedy. Sadly, it was their son Will Franklin who unknowingly ran over Maria. Every time I think about that I hurt for him. I cannot imagine what that family has gone through in their loss. As Steven jumped into his vehicle and got ready to head to the hospital where Maria had been taken he did something powerful. He rolled down his window and shouted to his son, “Will Franklin! Your father loves you.” With that he left to see about Maria.

He shared that he did not even remember doing that until someone brought it back to his attention. During the interview he explained that he was already concerned he was losing one child that day and he did not want to lose another. Will shared that after realizing what had occurred he just wanted to run away, he was devastated. As he began to run, his brother tackled him and hugged him with his other siblings around him. What a powerful display of love in the middle of such tragedy.

Later I was listening to Jesus Culture and the song, “How He Loves” came on. There is a verse that says, “We are His portion and He is our prize, drawn to redemption by the GRACE in His eyes. If GRACE is an ocean, we’re all sinking. So heaven meets earth like a sloppy wet kiss and my heart turns violently inside of my chest. I don’t have time to maintain these regrets when I think about the way… He loves us, oh, how He loves us, oh how He loves us… Oh how He loves!”

This incredible revelation of the love of God, the love of the Father suddenly swept over me. No matter what goes on in our lives, the mistakes we make, He loves us!

Imagine on your very worst day, when everything that could go wrong does go wrong and the things you thought were in the bag are dumped out at your feet and stomped on. On THAT day, God has opened the window of heaven and yelled your name, and then He says, “Your Father loves you!” And if that isn’t enough, when you feel like running and hiding, He tackles you with that love, that ocean of grace and surrounds you with people who believe in you in spite of every mistake, wrong turn, or circumstance. Oh! How He loves!!!!

That amazing love makes it so difficult to sit around regretting this and that, playing the shoulda, woulda, coulda song… because as the verse says, “I don’t have time to maintain these regrets…” Regrets demand maintenance. Did you realize that? The word “regrets” as it is used in this song is defined as: A feeling of disappointment or distress about something that one wishes could be different. Guess what… maintaining regrets will only beget one thing, MORE regrets!

So, with that said, let me encourage you today. Get swallowed up by His Ocean of grace and become enveloped by your Father! YOUR FATHER LOVES YOU!

“Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, Who loved us and gave us everlasting consolation and encouragement and well-founded hope through [His] grace (unmerited favor), comfort and encourage your hearts and strengthen them [make them steadfast and keep them unswerving] in every good work and word.” (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17)
